Thomas Tuchel is known for his ability to utilize different formations and tactics in his managerial career, and in his first few months as a Chelsea manager, he used the 3-4-3 and 3-4-2-1 formations and went on to win the UEFA Champions League with them, but in his first full pre-season as Chelsea manager, he has been using the 3-4-1-2 formation in most of his games, especially when he needs more goals.
Ike Ubgo and Broja played as double strikers against Bournemouth, and the two of them scored to help Chelsea win the game.
We saw this against Bournemouth when his team conceded the first goal in the second half, Tuchel quickly changed from 3-4-3 to 3-4-1-2 formation and his team responded well by scoring two goals a few minutes later. He also used the same tactic against Arsenal and his team created a lot of chances and scored two goals, this means that his new tactic is working for him and he could consider using it as his main formation next season. But in my own opinion, this new formation could affect the likes of Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Hudson-Odoi, and other attacking midfielders and wingers.
How can the 3-4-1-2 formation affect the above-mentioned players?
The 3-4-1-2 formation requires two strikers and one attacking midfielder behind the two strikers, and Hakim Ziyech appears to be the best number 10 in the current Chelsea squad, so he is expected to always start behind the two strikers. And given in this formation, the two full-backs(Chilwell and James) are expected to play as wingers, this could affect many attacking midfielders and wingers as their chances in the starting lineup could be limited.
Christian Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi were deployed on the sides in their pre-season game against Arsenal on Sunday.
However in the absence of Chilwell and James against Arsenal, Pulisic and played as a right-wing-back while Hudson-Odoi played as a left-wing-back, but given James and Chilwell are expected to return to the starting lineup when they are fit, Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi could find it hard to start games next season. Though given how important Mason Mount is to the team, Tuchel could create a space for him in the starting lineup.
Below is how the formation could look like.
Note: this is just an opinion from the author, and Tuchel might do otherwise as he knows the best for his team, but let just hope he uses the right formation and tactics that will favor his star players next season.
Hakim Ziyech could finally show his full potentials if he plays as a number 10 for Chelsea next season.
